164/365 - She Did It!

One of the swim instructors had to pick her up and carry her to the edge of the bank, and she cried the whole time she was in the water, but she did it! She swam in the river! I'm so proud of her, and later in the day I could tell she was a pretty proud of herself too. We went to the store and bought a pack up Starbursts to celebrate. Yeah!

163/365 - Love you too!

I got to spend the day with my best friend yesterday. She was in Texas for a dog judging assignment and drove 3 hours to see me. We spent 6 hours together, and then she drove 3 hours back to College Station so she could get some rest before her assignment today. Now that's a good friend! However, I have to say, we weren't always the best of friends. As a matter of fact, there was a time when we really didn't even like each other all that much. That was a while ago, when we were younger and both had strong opinions and differences of opinions. But things changed... and time went by.... and we both softened around the edges and were drawn together by a common thread...a thread that eventually entwined our lives together and made us realize we were more alike and had more in common than we realized. We began to understand each other and were there for each other when things got tough because we each knew just what the other was going through and how it felt and how hard it was to deal with. Through those tough times a friendship and mutual respect blossomed and we're now closer than we've ever been. We started out as "dog" friends, but now we rarely talk about the dogs and instead talk about life and kids and random crazy stuff. I'm so thankful to have her in my life because I know no matter what's going on, I can talk to her and she will listen. She will tell me what I need to hear even if it's not what I want to hear. And if I really needed her, she's the kind of friend that wouldn't ask why and would be on the next plane headed to Texas. When someone knows you- really knows you, all the good and all the bad...and accepts you just the way you are, that's such a rare, amazing thing. Everyone should have a friend like that!

I found this on my refrigerator this morning and it made me smile, and even though I'm mad at myself for not getting a photo of us together yesterday, I'm glad I have this note and photo to remind me how lucky I am to have such a special friend in my life.

Love you too Homie!

161/365 - Still not sure....

While the other's went for a swim in the river, Randi watched from the bank, holding her goggles and trying to work up the courage to do it next time.
The wristbands she has on are from the waterpark here; the kids love to see how many they can collect over the summer.

160/365 - Butterfly

Randi is doing so well in her swim lessons that they moved her up a level to the "Challenge" class. She still isn't too keen on going in the river with the rest of the group, but she did awesome with her butterfly stroke today. I'm so proud of my little fish!

159/365 - Leap of Faith

My little guy started swim lessons on Monday. He doesn't like going, and on Tuesday morning he was sure to tell me that he didn't need to go again because he went the day before. But we did go again on Tuesday and again today. Slowly but surely he's participating more and gaining his confidence. This afternoon he proudly said "Mama, I think I know how to swim now!" And later while playing in the pool with his Daddy, he announced to all of us that he liked going to swim lessons. Whew! Thank goodness because we have another week and half of classes to go!

Night Swimming Photo Contest Winner

Holy cow! I just found out that my "Night Swimming" photo was picked as a Top 5 finalist at the McDougall Photo Blog and was the overall winner over at Through a Photographer's Eye. WOW. Thank you both so much for the recognition and to everyone for your wonderful comments.

This photo was a lot of fun to take and it showed me that sometimes I just have to think outside the box, trust my instincts and fire away. I really didn't think I could capture what I was seeing, but I pushed myself and my camera and am so happy I did. I'm thrilled you all liked it and am proud to be among the company of so many other talented photographers. Congrats to the other finalist's and to Misty and Jennifer for sponsoring fun contests like this.

"My eyes popped open wide with amazement when I saw this! Perfect lighting especially for a night shot with no flash, perfect clarity and those water droplets....incredible!!! Congratulations, Kristin!" Misty

"How awesome is this shot by Kristin? A lot of people would have used a flash and destroyed this shot. The rest of us would have said "It's too dark - I won't even bother", myself included. Instead, Kristin cranked her iso and totally rocked this shot." Jennifer
