Sorry this post is so long and picture heavy but there was just too much cuteness here not to share....
Ever since we went to see Pirates of the Caribbean and had dinner at the Pirate show in California, Ryan has been obsessed with Pirates, so it wasn't a big surprise to me when he told me he wanted to have a Pirate Party for his 5th birthday. I was happy to oblige because there are so many fun things to do for a Pirate Party that it made it pretty easy to put together. For my part, I made some fun treats to eat. Mind you, I am NOT a cook, chef or baker, but thanks to Pinterest and the Internet, I found some really cute ideas that I was determined to tackle. I didn't want Ryan to look back and say I never made him anything for his birthday, so I gave it a whirl. The shark was easier than it looked, but I must admit, I ordered a cake from the store just in case my Pirate Pops were a flop. As it was though, they were super easy and everyone loved them, especially the birthday boy...who even helped make them!

For Michael's part, he and his brother Robin schemed the day before and came up with all kinds of fun things for a Pirate treasure hunt. I knew part of what they were going to do, and I filled the big treasure box with goodies and knew where they were going to hide it, but I had no idea to what extent they were going to go to with their props and costumes and how into character they were both going to get. Uncle Robin and Michael greeted the pint sized pirates as they arrived but then disappeared into the depths of the ship, only to reappear about 15 minutes later totally transformed. They stormed into the house and began rounding up the crew by loudly announcing that all scallywags were to meet on deck downstairs immediately. They were waiving their swords and acting like crazy pirates, so the kids eyes were as big as saucers as they came down the stairs, and I don't think most of them had any idea who they were. One of the little ones even started crying...poor little thing!

Captain Blackbeard began by telling the scallywags that he'd found a burned out map leading to buried treasure. The only problem was, the area where the X was had been destroyed by the fire. Fortunately Blackbeard and Jack each had a clock with a clue attached leading them to different parts of the neighborhood where they'd find more clues as to the location of the treasure. The little pirates were divided in half to help the Captains find the next clue. A box filled with compasses was buried on a sandy beach, cannon balls were hidden in thick brush, and wooden crosses hanging in the trees led the way to a final clue tucked inside an ancient bottle.

The Captains crossed paths several times during their trek and even broke out in a sword fight in the middle of the street on one occasion.

But the best battle occurred when the two teams got their last clue and realized they had to join forces with the other team in order to put their two halves of the new map together to make one whole map that would lead them all to the buried treasure. A heated pirate debate went on for several minutes in regards to how the treasure would be divided. One of the parents finally asked me how long Michael and Robin had rehearsed their parts? I knew the boys had spent several hours the day before writing out and hiding their clues, but I also knew them well enough to know that they hadn't rehearsed what they were going to say...that all came naturally. At that moment, in those scraggly woods, surrounded by a bunch of excited little kids, they were just two grown up brothers reverting back their childhood and doing what comes naturally to boys...they were playing! It made me laugh until I almost cried and it warmed my soul to the bottom of my heart. All in all, I think Michael and Robin had as much fun, if not even more fun, than all the little kids put together!

Finally the Captains reached an agreement, the two maps were put together and the united teams headed for the location of the big red X on the map. Soon a treasure box full of loot bags and goodies was unearthed and the scallywags enjoyed the bounty of their booty!

After their adventure on the high seas, the scallywags came inside for snacks and dessert. Ryan wanted a piece of cake with his face on it so he could eat himself...silly boy!

When the kids were all sugared up, we sent them outside one more time to bust open the Pirate Ship. Ryan has always, always wanted to have a pinata at his party and since we finally live in a place were we have trees to hang one from, his last Pirate wish was granted.

After most of the little pirates left and just our immediate family was still here, cousin Hunter and family gave Ryan his birthday present. I remember the day Hunter got this Gator like it was yesterday; he was so little and sweet, and now he's so grown up. Since he doesn't ride the Gator anymore, he thought Ryan might like to have it...and by his reaction, I'd say he was right!

Aaw, Kristin. I just fell in love with your silly family all over again. What an awesome hubs and BIL you have that they would do so much for those kiddos. Makes me wish I was there to be a part of the fun but you helped my feel like I was through your pictures. What incredible memories!
WHAT AN AWESOME PARTY!!! I can't believe you said those cake pops were easy to make. You need to explain how you did them b/c we made those eyeballs for Halloween and I was over them in about 10 minutes.
I LOVE how Michael and his brother got so into it! So much fun. I think I have the same boots as Robin too. :)
LOve R&R's pirate shirts. Did you make those? Ryan does look thrilled on that car.
